KEY VIEWS

The new extensions are set back from the east end of the existing building to preserve the views of the original completed end to Building 3. The new extension is designed with a simple plain façade facing east to maintain the prominence of the original Lasdun building. This approach can be seen on images A and D. 

The proposed building plot to the north elevation of Building 3 is concealed to the north by an existing copse of deciduous and evergreen trees. These trees serve to screen the extended building when viewed from Chancellors Drive and in particular from the direction of Earlham Hall as shown in image B.

The proposal locates the new plant required for ventilation on the extension, it is shielded from view by the top floor (Level 3) on the north side of the existing building. This reduces the visual impact of the plant when viewed from the Broad or the centre of the original campus. Only the associated ductwork extends over the existing roof, which is screened by a low-level screen which also acts as a safety barrier. This approach preserves the key strategic views from the southern aspect of the building as shown in image C below.
